Enter any bar, biergarten, or restaurant in Germany and ask for “Ein Helles, bitte” and the server will bring you a golden, crisp half liter beer, that goes down so easily, you’ll ask for another one soon after.
Hell in German means bright, light, or pale. Ein Helles is a traditional German pale ale, meant to be enjoyed as a session beer on any occasion.
Two Roots Brewing Co’s version of a Helles, called Enough Said, hits the mark on being a perfectly drinkable, full-bodied, session beer that tastes like the real deal.
It pours a delightful golden color with a big foamy head. It’s crisp, refreshing, and hoppy, with a pleasant bitter finish.
When I first tasted this brew, I got very excited about having found another NA beer that will become a staple in our fridge. It pairs well with food like burgers and hot dogs, or spicy Asian or Indian dishes. And as an isotonic brew with vitamin B12, it definitely hits the spot after a hike, climb, or run.
I wouldn’t describe it as a traditional German Helles—for that it delivers too much of a lemony flavor and hop profile, reminding me of an IPA. It starts off citrusy and hoppy, and finishes bitter. It’s full-bodied and full-flavored with a pungent smell.
This is an exceptionally well done West Coast take on a German staple beer that will appeal to beer drinkers and the sober-curious alike. It won two gold medals (in 2019 and 2021) in the non-alcoholic category at the Great American Beer Festival.
Enough Said clocks in at 80 calories per can, compared to 150 calories for the same size serving of an alcoholic Helles. You could have almost two of these for every one of the alcoholic variety.
The body quality and great beer taste make me very excited to try Two Roots Brewing Co’s other brews. I received a shipment from them late last week, so more reviews will be coming your way soon!
Available online directly from the brewmasters themselves (with free shipping if you order two 6-packs or more) as well as in many grocery stores and Walmarts across the nation (use their store locator to find it in beer aisles near you). Prost!
It is one of my favorites as well and cant wait to swing by their taproom this weekend, here in Michigan.
